Dr. Uma Alagappan

Biography

A dermatologist is a doctor who specializes in conditions involving the skin, hair, and nails. A dermatologist can identify and treat more than 3,000 conditions. These conditions include eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancer, among many others.

Dr Uma completed her dermatology training in Changi General Hospital and National Skin Centre in 2015. She subsequently joined the KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital Dermatology Service where she sub specialise in Paediatric Dermatology. She was awarded the Ministry of Health Manpower Development Plan Award in 2019 to pursue Paediatric Immuno-dermatology and Allergy-dermatology in the renowned Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts, USA. Upon her return, she spearheaded several subspecialty clinics including the food allergy eczema clinic for the pediatric eczema patients, immunodermatology clinic and the psychology eczema multi-disciplinary clinic.

Dr Uma is also well versed with Women’s Dermatology in managing patients with pregnancy dermatoses, post menopausal skin issues and hair loss. She is also a Visiting Consultant at Singapore General Hospital where she manages Adult Dermatology patients and also contributes to the chronic eczema team.

Having a keen interest in education, Dr Uma has been involved in organizing and contributing to numerous pediatric & women’s dermatology conferences. She has also been invited to speak and lecture at local, regional and international dermatology conferences. She has given public talks on various trending dermatologic issues including the use of topical steroids, post menopausal skin and has contributed to Dermatology related articles in media. She has also been interviewed for MediaCorp programmes related to Dermatology issues. During her time in public practice, Dr Uma has mentored medical students and international clinical fellows over the years.

Dr Uma is a member of the Dermatological Society of Singapore (DSS), where she is a contributing member of the “Topical Steroid withdrawal/ addiction Workgroup”. She is also a Committee Member of the Asian Pediatric Dermatology Society (ASPD) and a member of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Society of Singapore (ACIS).

She is currently a Visiting Consultant at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and at the Singapore General Hospital, Dermatology Department. During her free time, Dr Uma enjoys baking and bonding over art and craft activities with her three children.
